Function, Material, and Selection of the Ball Valve

The ball valve emerged in the 1950s, and with the rapid development of science and technology, the continuous improvement of production processes and product structures, it has rapidly developed into a major type of valve in just 40 years. In Western industrialized countries, the use of ball valves is increasing year by year.

Ball valve function

The ball valve is mainly used to cut off, distribute and change the direction of the medium flow in the pipeline.  In Utmost ball valve factory, The ball valve with a V-shaped opening design also has excellent flow regulation function.

The ball valve is not only structurally simple and has good sealing performance, but also has a small volume, light weight, low material consumption, small installation size, and low driving torque within a certain nominal diameter range. It is easy to operate and can achieve rapid opening and closing. It is one of the fastest developing valve varieties in recent decades. Especially in industrialized countries, the use of ball valves is very extensive, and the variety and quantity of use are still expanding. It is developing towards high temperature, high pressure, large diameter, high sealing performance, long service life, excellent regulating performance and one valve with multiple functions. Its reliability and other performance indicators have reached a high level and have partially replaced china gate valve, globe valves, and regulating valves.

With the technological progress of ball valves, there will be wider applications, especially in the pipeline of oil and natural gas, refining and cracking devices, and in the nuclear industry. In addition, in the large and medium-diameter, medium and low-pressure areas of other industries, ball valves will also become one of the dominant types of valves.

Ball valve material

The common materials of ball valves are: cast iron, cast steel, stainless steel, and copper.

Cast iron ball valves are mostly used in low-pressure water supply pipelines, with common product models of flange connections; cast steel ball valves are mostly used in medium and high-pressure pipelines for water, steam, oil and other media; stainless steel ball valves have common one-piece ball valves, two-piece ball valves, and three-piece ball valves, which are threaded connections, mostly used for small-diameter water, steam, and oil applications; copper ball valves are ball valves made of brass as the valve body material, with threaded or flange connections, but threaded brass ball valves are more common on the market and have higher demand. They are mostly installed in HVAC pipelines for hot water use.

Ball valve selection

  • For the main pipelines for carrying petroleum and natural gas, which require cleaning and are buried underground, choose full-bore, full welded ball valve; for those buried above ground, choose full-bore welded or flange-connected ball valves, pneumatic actuated ball valve; for branch pipes, choose flange-connected, welded, full-bore or reduced-bore ball valves.

  • For the pipelines and storage equipment for finished oil products, choose flange-connected ball valves.

  • For the gas pipelines in cities, choose floating ball valve factory with flange connections and internal threads.

  • For the oxygen pipeline system in the metallurgical system, choose fixed ball valves with strict degreasing treatment and flange connections.

  • For the low-temperature medium pipeline system and equipment, choose low-temperature ball valves with valve covers.

  • For the pipeline system of the catalytic cracking unit of the refining device, choose lifting rod ball valves.

  • For the equipment and pipeline systems of corrosive media such as acids and alkalis in the chemical system, choose all-stainless steel ball valves made of austenitic stainless steel with fluoropolymer as the seat sealing ring.

  • For the high-temperature medium pipeline system or equipment in the metallurgical system, power system, petrochemical device, urban heating system, etc., choose metal-to-metal sealed ball valves.

  • For flow regulation, choose gear-worm transmission, pneumatic or electric ball valves with V-shaped openings.
